Abstract:
In a three-year container experiment, using Cox's Orange Pippin and Golden Delicious on M7, a heavy crop induced a greater decrease in vegetative growth than did spraying with Alar 85 or TIBA. Flower formation, with one exception, was also markedly reduced by heavy cropping the previous year: again, the growth inhibitors had little effect.
In Cox apples, the incidence of bitter pit was decreased by Alar and slightly increased by TIBA. The mineral content of the leaves was influenced differently in the two cultivars and that of the fruits generally rose with increasing crop.
In both leaves and fruits Alar sprayings induced an increase in calcium content.
