THE EFFECT OF HORMONE MIXTURES ON THE FRUIT-SET OF APPLE AFTER VARIOUS POLLINATION TREATMENTS

Authors:   R.R. Williams, R.M. Church, V.A. Flook
Abstract:
Hormone fruit-setting mixtures (PP 341) based on gibberellic acid and 1,3-diphenylurea, incorporating either 2-naphthoxyacetic acid (A) or 1-naphthylacetic acid (B) applied between full bloom and petal-fall to Cox's Orange Pippin which had received different amounts of hand pollination failed to increase the crop. Mixture A applied at an earlier stage to Crawley Beauty flowers reduced fruit-set and its incorporation in a germination medium killed apple pollen. Possible reasons for the lack of positive fruit-set response are given.
