Abstract:
The working group on peat culture sponsored a symposium on peat a symposium on peat and its use in horticulture, on 12-18th of June, 1967, in Helsinki.
The symposium was attended by 36 persons, 20 from Finland and 16 from nine other countries.
As President of the symposium acted Professor Dr.
F. Penningsfeld from Weihenstephan (Germany) and as Secretary Professor Dr.
V. Puustjärvi from Helsinki.
Altogether 12 papers were given during the symposium.
A part of them were focussed on the handling and fertilisation of peat, some papers gave new methods for analysis and improvement of growth in it.
A general scope on the use of peat, and growing of specific plants on it were subjects for some papers.
Nine most important papers are given in details in this volume.
In addition to the lectures, four excursions during the symposium were arranged.
The holdings of Sjöberg in Hyrylä, of Foundation for Forest Tree Breeding in Loppi, of Mattila and of Kulmala in Kangasala and that of Vakkuri in Hyvinkää were visited.
In all of these vegetables, flowers or and young plants in peat were raised.
A special "peat basin method" is applied in Mattila for asparagus sprengeri, carnation, mums, gerbera and for roses, in Kulmala for cucumbers as well.
The Peat Research Institute was "checked" and the peat production plant of Lohjan Kalkki in Ojakkala, too.
During the seven days a considerable part of the peat industry in South Finland was studied under the guidance of the Secretary of the symposium.
It is the opinion of the participants, that the excursions and visits were well arranged, well timed.
In addition, many of the companies, holdings and societies showed generously their hospitality during the symposium.
Following research projects were fixed for the 3 or 4 years ahead:
- comparing the different peat qualities, 2. experiments on use of different fertilizers for peat, 3. experiments on the need on liming of peat.
The comparative studies will be made according to the principles given by Dr.
Wille.
The participants of the symposium will be informed about the projects and those interested on these are invited to join for cooperation.
