Abstract:
While it is acknowledged that significant attempts are being made to regulate horticultural nomenclature at a local, perhaps national level and even at an international level through organizations such as ISTA and UPOV, there is still a degree of divergence between competing nomenclatural systems.
The requirement for an international forum to narrow or even close such divergence under the auspices of a recognized international non-governmental organization is discussed.
Horticulture requires world-wide acceptance of plant names at all ranks through consensus building systems.
The on-line database INGPUH™ is introduced as a potential vehicle for promoting the stability of generic names and consensus building.
How this acts as an internet-based gateway to other nomenclatural databases is demonstrated.
