ISHS Acta Horticulturae 799: V International Symposium on the Taxonomy of Cultivated Plants

NURSERY CATALOGUES - PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE

Author:   J.J. Cubey
Keywords:   conservation, cultivar, culture, electronic publication, Growing Heritage, nomenclature, international codes of nomenclature
Abstract:
Nursery catalogues are important publications, not only for gardeners, but in particular for horticultural taxonomists, as frequently they are the first place of publication for cultivar names. The importance of their conservation is discussed and how this features in the Growing Heritage Action Plan for the Conservation of Plants in Cultivation is highlighted. The scope of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) collection of nursery catalogues is outlined and the regrettable trend for fewer nurseries to produce printed catalogues is demonstrated. Recommendations for changes to the International Code of Nomenclature for Cultivated Plants (ICNCP), to permit establishment of new cultivar names given in electronic publications that are printed and archived in libraries, are summarized.
