Abstract:
Fig tree (Ficus carica L.) is well adapted to Tunisia conditions.
Its cultivation is common and traditional.
Prospections show that there are five major traditional fig growing centers.
Different uses of fig fruits and by-products are developed by farmers.
Actually, fig cultivation map and techniques are changing.
Local fig genetic resources are large and diverse but threatened by extinction.
Varieties of Smyrna type are dominant.
Cultivars of common type have a restricted ecological adaptation.
Lack of selected caprifigs is still a big problem.
Local germplasm collection, conservation and evaluation attempts and approaches are discussed.
