ISHS Acta Horticulturae 797: International Workshop on Greenhouse Environmental Control and Crop Production in Semi-Arid Regions

CO-STATE VARIABLES AS STRATEGIC SET-POINTS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL OF GREENHOUSES

Author:   I. Seginer

Abstract:
Co-state variables are the marginal values of the state variables of a system. Given a suitable model of the system to be controlled, the best values of the co-states can be determined. Since the relevant co-states are generally few, varying rather slowly and activating several control fluxes each, they can play the role of strategic set-points. A greenhouse grower wishing to control processes like growth, development and even certain disorders, may use the associated co-states to boost or retard the process of concern. In this study, simulations of simple cases have been carried out to illustrate the concept. By changing the growth co-state, activating simultaneously four fluxes (light, heat, ventilation and CO2), the system is able to counteract the effects of unexpected weather and erroneous model.
