SOME RESULTS OF USING 'VAN' TO IMPROVE THE RANGE OF SWEET CHERRY CULTIVARS IN BULGARIA

Author:   A. Zhivondov
Keywords:   Prunus avium, breeding, hybrids
Abstract:
After 1987, when the new breeding programme started at the Fruit Growing Institute in Plovdiv, ‘Van’ played a major role in the breeding activities. It has been grown in a collection orchard including 164 sweet cherry cultivars. In 1990 and 1991, great amounts of open-pollinated fruits were obtained. During the two-year cultivation of the seedlings in the breeding nursery, a mass selection by phenotype characteristics was carried out. One hundred and forty hybrids were selected, which were transferred into the breeding orchard. After fruiting began, a breeding assessment was conducted twice to evaluate the pomological and phenological characteristics. Fruit biometry was studied from 2000–2003. Initially, 19 elites were selected, the fruit of 18 of them ripening before ‘Van’. After further observations, 8 of the elites were discarded due to their unstable pomological characteristics. The use of open-pollinated hybrids of ‘Van’ created good preconditions for breeding of elites that could prolong the fruiting season by 25 days, with the pomological traits of the fruits being similar to the good characteristics of ‘Van’.
