THE EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT POLLINIZERS ON THE FRUIT SET AND POMOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF '0900 ZIRAAT' SWEET CHERRY

Keywords:   Prunus avium, pollination, bloom dates, fruit quality
Abstract:
‘0900 Ziraat’ is the leading sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) cultivar with high quality fruit characteristics in Turkey. Despite its importance, pollination problems remain, resulting in poor fruit set in different ecological conditions of the country. The current research was aimed at determining the effects of different pollinizers on ‘0900 Ziraat’ fruit set and fruit quality parameters. For this purpose, ‘Premier Giant’, ‘Van’, ‘Stark’s Gold’, ‘Celeste’, ‘Sunburst’, ‘Merton Late’, ‘Bing’, ‘Lapins’, ‘Bigarreau Gaucher’, ‘Sweetheart’, ‘Canada Giant’, ‘North Wonder’, ‘Burlat’ and ‘Lambert’ were chosen as pollen sources. During the research, prebloom and full bloom dates in the Çanakkale ecological conditions were recorded for 2002 and 2003. After fruit set, monthly determinations of fruit set percentage and cross compatibility were made. After the fruit ripened, they were analyzed for pomological characteristics such as fruit and stone weight, fruit size, pH, internal and external fruit coloration, stem length, titrable acidity and total soluble solids.
