Abstract:
During 2002–2004, the influence of herbicides on the vegetative and reproductive behavior of ‘Burlat’, ‘Kordia’ and ‘Lapins’ sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) trees grafted on ‘Gisela 5’ rootstock was investigated.
The trees were planted in 2001 at a spacing of 3 x 5 m (within x between rows). The herbicide pendimethalin (Stomp 33 EC) was applied in the spring (early March), before the onset of vegetative growth, in 2 trial doses: 4 L/ha and 6 L/ha.
The control was a non-treated row strip.
Pendimethalin in both trial doses effectively controlled all annual weed species.
After the effect of pendimethalin against secondary weed growth wore off, two treatments with glyphosate (Roundup) at 8 L/ha were applied during vegetative growth.
The trials with herbicide treatment had better vegetative growth and higher reproductive development of the cherry/rootstock combinations.
This can be explained by the elimination of weed competitors and the lack of inhibitory side effects of the herbicide on the young trees.
