PRELIMINARY RESULTS OF A CHERRY ROOTSTOCK TRIAL IN VIGNOLA, ITALY

Authors:   S. Lugli, S. Sansavini
Keywords:   Prunus avium, Gisela, Weiroot, vigor, planting density, fruit quality
Abstract:
A field trial was established in Italy’s Vignola district to determine the influence of 12 dwarfing and semi-dwarfing or vigorous rootstocks on ‘Lapins’ and ‘Regina’ sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.). Trees on the dwarfing and semi-dwarfing rootstocks were planted at a density of 1,096 trees/ha, while those on the vigorous rootstocks were planted at 667 trees/ha. ‘Gisela 7’ induced the earliest bearing in both varieties, while good results also were recorded for ‘Gisela 6’, followed by ‘Weiroot 158’ and ‘P-HL A’. The dwarfing stocks ‘Gisela 4’, ‘Edabriz’ and ‘Weiroot 158’, as well as the vigorous ‘MaxMa 14’, and especially, ‘MaxMa 60’, ‘Colt’ and hexaploid ‘Colt’ (‘Colt 6x’), did not perform well. The best fruit size and quality seem to confirm the top rankings of ‘Gisela 7’ and ‘6’.
