Abstract:
From 1998 to 2004, a trial using ‘Burlat’ and ‘Duroni 3’ sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) grafted on ‘Tabel® Edabriz’, ‘Maxma 14’, ‘SL 64’ and P. avium rootstocks was carried out in western Poland.
Rootstock effects on tree vigor, yield, productivity and fruit quality were examined.
After 7 years of evaluation, trunk cross-sectional areas of ‘Burlat’ and ‘Duroni 3’ trees on ‘Tabel® Edabriz’ were 46% and 65%, respectively, the size of trees on P. avium.
There were no significant differences in vigor of either cultivar on ‘Maxma 14’, ‘SL 64’ or P. avium. Five year cumulative yields of ‘Burlat’ on ‘Maxma 14’, ‘Tabel® Edabriz’ and ‘SL 64’ were significantly higher than on P. avium. Among all rootstocks, only ‘Tabel® Edabriz’ resulted in higher cumulative yields when ‘Duroni 3’ was the scion.
The productivity indices of both cultivars on ‘Tabel® Edabriz’ were higher than on other rootstocks.
Rootstock also influenced fruit quality. ‘Burlat’ had the lowest mean fruit weight when grafted on ‘Tabel® Edabriz’, while ‘Duroni 3’ on ‘Tabel® Edabriz’ and ‘SL 64’ had significantly smaller fruit in comparison to trees on P. avium and ‘Maxma 14’. Fruit total soluble solids (TSS) depended on both cultivar and rootstock. ‘Duroni 3’ on P. avium had the highest TSS, whereas ‘Burlat’ on ‘Maxma 14’ had the lowest.
