Abstract:
The Hungarian sweet and sour cherry breeding program was established in 1950. Thus far, nine sweet cherry and eight sour cherry varieties have been registered, and five sweet and two sour cherry varieties are candidates.
Registered new varieties of the last ten years include the sweet cherries ‘Alex’ (1997), ‘Kavics’ (1999), ‘Vera’ (2002) and ‘Rita’ (2004) and the sour cherry ‘Piramis’ (2004). The current candidate varieties include the sweet cherries ‘Sándor’, ‘Petrus’, ‘Paulus’, ‘Aida’, and ‘Carmen’ and the sour cherry ‘Dukát’.
