Abstract:
At Yalova Atatürk Central Horticultural Research Institute, the yield and growth of 18 foreign and local sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) cultivars (‘0900 Ziraat’, ‘Veysel’, ‘Sunburst’, ‘Venus’, ‘Octavia’, ‘Techlovan’, ‘Belge’, ‘Regina’, ‘Cristalina’, ‘Newmoon’, ‘Rainier’, ‘Precoce de Bernard’, ‘Ferbolus Verdel’, ‘Lapins’, ‘Kordia’, ‘Summit’, ‘Celeste’ and ‘Sweetheart’) grafted on ‘Gisela 5’ rootstock were determined from 2002 to 2005. ‘Venus’ had the largest trunk diameter (7.85 cm) and ‘Sweetheart’ the smallest (3.72 cm). ‘Regina’ was the most vigorous with a 54.0 cm average shoot length and 313 cm tree height, while ‘Sweetheart’ was the weakest (20.4 cm shoot length and 148 cm tree height).
The cultivars had different canopy development and architectural habits; ‘Lapins’ and ‘Kordia’ had upright growth with very few lateral shoots, whereas ‘Veysel’ had many lateral shoots and ‘Sweetheart’ had the smallest crown development.
The phenological parameters were recorded and the yields were obtained from ‘Sweetheart’, ‘Lapins’, ‘Celeste’, ‘Summit’ and ‘Veysel’, which had early bearing characteristics on ‘Gisela 5’. The best cumulative yields over the first three years were on ‘Techlovan’ (4.50 kg/tree) and ‘Rainier’.
