Author:   F. Kappel
Keywords:   Prunus avium, P. cerasus, cultivar, fruiting traits, S-alleles
Abstract:
The first public cherry breeding program in the “new world” (North and South America and Australia) began in 1911 in Geneva, New York. A number of programs continue to this day. An inventory of those programs is presented. Information presented includes history and size of the programs, breeding objectives, cultivars released, attributes evaluated and general comments about the programs. Programs that are discussed include: in the USA, the programs in Michigan, New York and Washington; in Canada, the programs in Ontario, British Columbia and Saskatchewan; and in Australia, the program in South Australia. A number of cultivars have been released from these programs that are being grown both locally and internationally.
