RESULTS OF POLLINATION AND FRUIT SET INCOMPATIBILITY STUDIES IN SOME ROMANIAN SWEET CHERRY VARIETIES

Abstract:
Almost a dozen valuable sweet cherry varieties were bred and released in Romania within the past two decades. Some of these new varieties have already been established in sweet cherry orchards. Others are expected to soon join or replace current varieties in commercial orchards. Due to the genetic barriers involved in reproduction, and as a consequence, to the special relations between different varieties, the profitability of new sweet cherry orchards is not only a result of cultivars with good fruit quality and resistance to specific pests and diseases, but also of the right pattern for combining cultivars according to their corresponding pollination suitability for high yields. Therefore, since 2001, an extensive study was initiated with the aim of establishing the intersterility groups of the new Romanian sweet cherry varieties. So far, based on the ability to set fruits either by pollinating the Romanian varieties with pollen from selected varieties representing as many of the intersterility groups as possible, or by using the Romanian varieties as pollenizers, they were assigned to one of the 18 recognized incompatibility (intersterility) groups. An important result was that many of these new varieties were highly interfertile when pollinated reciprocally, thus indicating their different genetic background. ‘Daria’, ‘Izverna’ and ‘Superb’ are among the new Romanian sweet cherry varieties for which the S-alleles appear to be certain. Thus, based on the very low fruit set (and failure to reach maturity) when pollinated by ‘Jaboulay’, we propose the assignment of ‘Daria’ to incompatibility group X (S6S9) and ‘Superb’ and ‘Izverna’ to group IV (S6S9).
