| Abstract:
Consumers expect their food to be safe and nutritious. Establishing standards is the first step to building consumer confidence. Contamination by microbial pathogens often results from an external source at some point from production to consumption. Once contaminated, removing or killing pathogens on fresh produce is very difficult. The prevention of microbial contamination is favoured over those treatments which seek to ameliorate any contamination that may have occurred. Thus the production of safe food requires a quality assurance system. Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) are likely to provide such an assurance system. The objectives of GAP are to produce safe food under production practices that are friendly to the environment. Standard Operating Procedures must be flexible and appropriate to the location and the conditions. In response to consumer concerns about food safety and to protect the environment, the Royal Project, with the support of ACFS, has developed a GAP framework. By November 2004, 2,675 farmers cultivating an area of 1,200 hectares were GAP certified. | |
