ISHS Acta Horticulturae 793: XI International Workshop on Fire Blight

ABSENCE OF STREPTOMYCIN RESISTANCE GENES IN ANTIBIOTIC FORMULATIONS

Authors:   F. Rezzonico, B. Duffy, V.O. Stockwell
Keywords:   antibiotic, resistance, antibiotics, Erwinia amylovora, fire blight, streptomycin
Abstract:
Antibiotic resistance development is a major argument against their agricultural application. Formulations used in animal husbandry have been found to contain not only the intended antibiotic but also resistance genes from the producing organism, possibly contributing to rapid resistance development. We analysed plant protection formulations of streptomycin used to control fire blight and found no evidence of resistance genes.
