Authors:   F.J. López-Escudero, A. Trapero, M.A. Blanco-López
Abstract:
Spain is the leading world producer of olive oil and tables olives, with more than 2.4 Millions ha (1.5 of them are located in Andalucía, southern Spain). Control of olive diseases represents an important item in current priorities of Spanish program on olive Research, Development and Innovation. Scientific activity of the Group AGR-216 "Patología Agroforestal" (Department of Agronomy, University of Córdoba) has focussed on main diseases affecting olive in southern Spain, particularly from the last decade. Research has covered studies on etiology, epidemiology and control of fungal olive diseases, such as leaf spot and fruit disease complex (Spilocaea oleagina, Pseudocercospora cladosporioides and Colletotrichum spp.), root rot (Phytophthora spp.) and Verticillium wilt (VW) (Verticillium dahliae). Particularly, VW is nowadays the most threatening disease in olive orchards in Spain and presumably in all the Mediterranean basin countries, due to its extension during last years.
