Abstract:
The effect of NaCl salinity and saline with drought stress (Saline-Drought Stress=SDS) on some physiological traits of olive cultivars was studied.
One-year-old olive cvs. 'Manzanilla', 'Conservalia', 'Dezfuli', 'Zard' and 'Fishomi' were grown in 10 L pots containing a sand-perlite mixture (1:1) for 5 months.
Plants were irrigated with half-strength Coic solution daily.
Treatments include control (100 mM NaCl) and SDS (100 mM NaCl + irrigation at 6 day intervals). Only SDS treatment caused significant reduction in relative water content (RWC). Stomatal resistance increased by saline and SDS stresses and cv. 'Dezfuli' had the lowest variation in stomatal resistance in comparison with other cultivars.
RWC and stomatal resistance were influence mostly by SDS and salt stress respectively.
Results indicated that cv. 'Dezfuli' was more tolerant to both salt and SDS stresses and cvs. 'Fishomi' and 'Manzanilla' were more sensitive.
Cv. 'Conservalia' with good tolerance to saline stress, did not show the same to SDS. The results of this research indicate that response to saline and SDS stresses can vary among olive genotypes.
