SEASONAL EVOLUTION OF TRUNK DIAMETER FLUCTUATIONS IN FULL IRRIGATED OLIVE TREES

Abstract:
Trunk Diameter Fluctuations (TDF) have been proposed as an irrigation scheduling methods in a number of fruit trees. We recorded TDF periodically in no-water-stress conditions in order to describe the seasonal pattern and to establish temporal baseline for Trunk Growth Rate (TGR) and Maximum Daily Shrinkage (MDS). The measurements were performed in a young (5-years-old irrigated olive orchard (cv. Cornicabra) in Ciudad Real, Spain). MDS agreed well with Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD) (R2=0.89***; MDS=0.35VPD) with one year of data. The MDS-VPD relationship was the same during all the season though other authors reported variations in olive trees with great harvest (we obtained around 8 kg per tree). TGR showed a continuous increase until full bloom (Day of the Year (DOY) 148), then decreased sharply until day 190, when values oscillated between 0.1-0.15 mm day-1. Changes in TGR were evaluated in relation to temperature and fruit development. In the phase of great increase, TGR related closely to mean temperature (R2=0.82***, TGR=-0.14+0.014 Tmean). No agreement was found, however, when the pooled data of TGR values were used. The decrease in TGR values from DOY 155 until DOY 190 corresponded with pit development. Structural measurements showed steady endocarp expansion from, at least, DOY 171, with maximum endocarp size, associated with the intensification of pit hardening at DOY 192. The TDF values obtained with cv. Cornicabra were similar to others reported in the literature for olive trees, also in full irrigated conditions.
