Abstract:
Several agronomic and commercial characteristics of six olive oil cultivars were analysed in the southern of Catalonia (Spain). The olive oil cultivars tested in this trial were 'Picual', 'Hojiblanca' and 'Manzanilla de Sevilla' from Andalusia; 'Arbequina' from Catalonia; 'Empeltre' from Ebro Valley (Navarra, Aragón and Catalonia); and 'Blanqueta' from Valencia. The irrigated comparative trial was planted in 1992 in Santa Bárbara (Baix Ebre-Montsiŕ area), trained to open vase and it was spaced 7 x 6 m (238 trees/ha). The results, analysed from the last five crops (6th to 10th year of the plantation), show that the 'Blanqueta' and 'Picual'cultivars have been the most productive, with average yields around 6400 kg of olives per hectare during the full production period (1998-2002); followed by and 'Manzanilla de Sevilla' (6000 kg/ha); 'Arbequina' and 'Hojiblanca' (4200 kg/ha); and 'Empeltre' (3200 kg/ha). 'Arbequina' had the highest cropping efficiency (cumulative yield/canopy volume) and productivity (cumulative yield/trunk cross sectional area). 'Manzanilla de Sevilla' and 'Hojiblanca' trees produced the largest fruits (average fruit weight 4.5 g), while 'Arbequina' produced the smallest fruits (1.7 g). The oil content, expressed as % on dry basis, was the highest in 'Picual' (46.7%) and the lowest in 'Hojiblanca' (43.5%).
