Abstract:
Histological studies of embryogenic calli with attached embryos at different maturity stages in two olive cultivars ('Zard' and 'Mission') were carried out.
The results showed embryonic mass were originated from epidermal and subepidermal cells, i.e. embryo primordia were located on epidermal cells.
Sometimes epidermal cells of a somatic embryo specially embryo at globular and heart stages could produce another embryo primordia.
For this reason one or more embryos could be generated on a somatic embryo.
In general, embryonic mass produce some embryos types consisting of: (1) single embryo in normal shape; (2) single embryo with developed cotyledons; (3) double or multiple embryos that coupled to each other.
The first type of embryos always produced normal plantlet, the second type generated plantlet that had got developed and folded cotyledons and the last one didn't germinate normally.
