CLONE SELECTION ON NIZIP YAGLIK AND KILIS YAGLIK OLIVE (OLEA EUROPAEA L.) VARIETIES

Abstract:
The olive is second important crop for Gaziantep province. It is spreaded out in total 26,347 ha areas and there are a total of 2,701,160 trees in the Gaziantep province. More than half of olive trees are planted in Nizip and the Nizip Yaglik variety is commonly cultivated. Thirty eight percent of Southeast Anatolian region’s olive trees are Nizip Yaglik and 52% of it is Kilis Yaglik varieties. There was no study on Nizip Yaglik and Kilis Yaglik olive clone selection up to now. This project aimed of selection of Nizip Yaglik and Kilis Yaglik olive clones which have high yield, high oil content (%), low alternate bearing and low rate. Age of trees (minimum 20-25), performance of variety and physiological status of trees were considered on selection studies. Relative grading for the first year was made according to yield and shotberry rate. Twenty five village of the Nizip district were surveyed and 32 trees were marked. In the case yield, the type of number 27 is taken the highest grade, the lowest numbers were 11 and 18, and the others were between them. The number 29 had the lowest shotberries rate.
