Abstract:
Olive-growing is very important for many countries, but no much work has been made so far to determine, conserve and study the related olive varietal structures.
This paper presents the history and management of the Olive World Germplasm Bank of CIFA "Alameda del Obispo", Córdoba, Spain, started to be established by FAO-INIA in 1970. It also provides the list of the accessions already introduced in collection, which are systematically studied by several research groups and informs about the parameters being used to classify them.
This Bank was the first important international attempt to conserve and characterize olive cultivated varieties from several countries under field conditions.
