EFFECTS OF COUNSELING WORKSHOPS UTILIZING FAMILIAR WOODLAND

Author:   I. Uehara
Keywords:   counseling workshop, Self Counseling (SC), Structured Group Encounter (SGE), familiar woodland
Abstract:
The healing functions of woodland have become more important for our stressful modern lives. Counseling works also have important meaning in our daily lives and working places. Active counseling works can be physically effective in outdoor exercise and recreational activities, too. Therefore, counseling works utilizing familiar woodland might have effects and possibilities therapeutically. This paper shows some case studies of Self Counseling (SC) and Structured Group Encounter (SGE) at several different woodland environments in Japan. Through attempting the counseling activities in the woods, participants showed affirmative changes in their ability to accept themselves, communicate with each other, to become more familiar with woods, and so forth. These results show that both SC and SGE utilizing a familiar woodland environment can be psychologically effective.
