Abstract:
Human beings have two types of needs: Instinctive/animalistic (biological/ physical) ones and creative/humanistic (emotional/spiritual) ones.
When instinctive desires are satisfied, we feel healed, as expressed by words like tranquility, calmness, stability, relaxation.
But if those desires are not met, we are left with feelings of unease, anxiety, nervousness, irritation, fear, instability.
When our creative needs are fulfilled, we experience pleasurable emotions, such as gratification, delight, happiness; but if our creative needs are not met, we feel discontented, angry, disappointed, despairing, and desperate.
Horticulture not only stimulates and satisfies our biological/physical needs, promoting a sense of healing, it also satisfies our emotional/spiritual needs, developing our creativity, bringing pleasure to us and those around us.
The satisfaction of both needs make us feel that we are living fully as human beings, empowering us to experience total health physically, mentally and socially.
