Abstract:
A horticultural therapy (HT) program was instituted for two months in a nursing home in Kanagawa, Japan. Twenty residents participated in weekly sessions conducted by volunteers. The residents were divided into three groups based on the following criteria: Group 1: Self-sufficient, without dementia, Group 2: With aphasia or paralysis resulting from a stroke, without dementia, Group 3: With dementia. Suitable goals were set, and the elderly participants were evaluated in relation to these goals. This case study provided the following results. Group 1: Most of the clients in this group were highly motivated and communicative from the beginning of the program; therefore, the selection of effective evaluations and goals took into consideration their preliminary initiative and communication skills. Group 2: Most of the clients in this group showed an improvement in their self-confidence and self-achievement by regularly moving their hands. Group 3: Because of appropriate support from the volunteers, the clients in this group showed an increased attention span and improved communication skills. This study emphasizes the importance of designing attractive programs that establish suitable goals dependant on individual needs.
