SALINITY EFFECTS ON TOMATO

Abstract:
Results of a research conducted in the field to evaluate salinity effects on three tomato cultivars are reported. Plants of tomato cv. Dart, Robin and Tomito were watered at three salinity levels; S0, S1 and S2 where the electrical conductivity of water (ECw) was equal to 0.5 as control, 4 and 8 dS m-1, respectively. The relative marketable yield vs. the soil electrical conductivity (ECe) showed that the values of 'Tomito' and 'Dart' are in agreement with respect to the Maas and Hoffman model of tomato as reported by Francois and Maas. In contrast, 'Robin' had a lower salinity tolerance, probably because of the greater decrease in fruit mean weight with respect to the other two cultivars that are characterized by smaller fruits. An increase in fruit dry matter and total soluble solids with increased salinity was observed. For 'Tomito' and 'Robin' blossom-end rot increased from 0.5% for S0 to 7.7% for S2 but this was not statistically significant. However, in 'Dart', a cultivar with elongated fruit, blossom-end rot increased significantly compared to the control (0.8%) to S2 (19.5%).
