Abstract:
'Pomodoro di Sorrento' is one of the most interesting multilocular Italian tomato landraces for the fresh market. In this work, a morphological, agronomic and qualitative characterization was made for the Pomodoro di Sorrento ecotype in three years of open field trials (2002–2004) in two locations (Angri and Battipaglia). The results of this research showed that the yield of this ecotype was strongly variable across years and locations. This was due to the absence of genetic disease resistances in 'Pomodoro di Sorrento' and to environmental stresses. Despite these problems, production of 'Pomodoro di Sorrento' has increased in recent years because of great market demand due to its good flavor, which is better than other modern tomato cvs.
