Abstract:
Grapes are grown on an area of 1400 hectares in Punjab state.
The varieties under cultivation are Perlette, Flame Seedless and Beauty Seedless.
Although these varieties are early ripening, they suffer from one or another drawback, like poor quality bunches.
With advancement of research made in the department of Horticulture, P.A.U., the suitable technology has been developed to enhance the quality of grapes.
The bunch quality can be significantly improved by adopting fruit quality improvement technology.
It comprises of flower bud thinning + girdling + GA3 dips.
Flower bud thinning is done one week before flowering thereby leaving 100–120 flower buds per panicle.
When berry size is 4 mm, girdling is done by removing 4 mm wide ring of bark from the main stem and dipping the cluster in 40 ppm GA3. The field should have sufficient moisture during girdling and at least 3 weeks after girdling.
In addition, to this practice, two foliar sprays of potassium sulphate one at one week after fruit set and again at veraison, significantly improves the quality of bunches, having amber coloured and bold berries.
