ISHS Acta Horticulturae 785: International Symposium on Grape Production and Processing

RECOMMENDATIONS AND STATEMENTS OF THE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON GRAPE PRODUCTION AND PROCESSING HELD AT BARAMATI (PUNE), MAHARASHTRA, INDIA DURING 6–11TH FEBRUARY 2006

Author:   S. Kanchan
Abstract:
The symposium has helped in the exchange of knowledge, ideas and experience of scientists from different continents of the world and grape growers from India, in obtaining a global perspective on grape production, processing and marketing; and in building linkages between international organizations and scientists which will help in developing collaborative research and developmental projects. The direct interaction in the vineyards, in research institutes and during the symposium between the experts from South Africa, California, Chile, Brazil, Australia, Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Israel, China and Korea with scientists and progressive grape growers from India resulted in global acknowledgement and appreciation of the strengths of Indian viticulture; the competitive quality of grape, raisin and wine made in India; and the world class research facilities in the ICAR institute. The appraisal of problems facing Indian viticulture with eminent scientists resulted in identification of technological gaps and new thrust areas of research. Further, existing production, protection and management techniques which need improvement were identified. The important recommendations and statements which emerged in the various technical sessions are summarized below:
