Abstract:
A computer based expert system to assist farmers in taking day-to-day decisions to manage Powdery mildew disease in vineyard has been developed using Visual basic and MS Access. The 'NRCG-SKAI PMExpert' is a rule based decision support system. It requires daily weather data on maximum and minimum temperature, maximum and minimum relative humidity (RH) and rainfall and field data on pruning date, presence of powdery mildew disease and nutrient deficiency symptoms and name and date of the last fungicide application in the past fifteen days. It generates: a) diagnosis based on weather risk, growth stage risk, nutrient deficiencies affecting powdery mildew and previous fungicide applications; b) recommendations on the choice of fungicides and their doses for control of the disease. The software also provides detail guides for the management of powdery mildew and nutrient deficiency which supports in better understanding of the recommendations generated by the software, information on weather data equipments and proper recording of weather data ensures the correct inputs to the expert system. This paper describes and discusses the NRCG-SKAI PMExpert software for effective management of powdery mildew in Indian vineyards.
