Abstract:
Sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill.) is a monoecious species widely distributed in the Iberian Peninsula. In Andalusia, there are two main areas in Huelva and Malaga regions dedicated to fruit production with traditional varieties grafted onto seedling rootstocks. This study is focused in the characterization of these traditional varieties. For this, 59 grafted chestnut trees from the main traditional varietal denominations of each area were analysed. Ten morphological quantitative traits of fruit were selected for the analysis. It has been stated significant differences between the main varietal types from Huelva and Malaga regions.
