EFFECTS OF PHOTOPERIOD ON WINTER REGROWTH OF ZOYSIA JAPONICA CV. LANYIN NO. III

Abstract:
Zoysia japonica 'Lanyin No. III' was studied in southern China to determine the effect of long-day and short-day light treatments on turfgrass development under different shade conditions. A two-factorial experiment was conducted, in the field plots using shelters to simulate the shade of stadium and light bulbs to extend photoperiods. The results showed that leaf length, leaf width, cover-degree, shoot height, biomass weight of aboveground and underground, and root/shoot ratio were increased with increased light duration from autumn to early spring. The weight of aboveground and underground as well as the ratio of root/shoot were increased by 30.8%, 21.8% and 26.1% respectively with shade treatment, and were increased by 17.4%, 18.9% and 3.6% under un-shaded conditions. Primary results indicate the winter regrowth of Zoysia japonica 'Lanyin No. III' could be enhanced by extending photoperiod.
