Abstract:
Now that it is time for us to return to our own laboratories we might say that we have achieved something worthwhile at this Symposium if our discussions have led to the beginnings of new hypotheses.
Our aim should be to postulate hypotheses, to form a central core of tested ideas which should permit us to propagate any species by tissue culture.
At this time, we are all aware of the solid core of empiricism, of luck, of "easy" species, of hit-or-miss tactics in our work; we have no clear ideas on the underlying mechanisms for the responses that we have achieved.
It is possible to divide the Plant Kingdom into two tissue culture categories: one very small category which includes tobacco and carrot, and one very large category which includes the vast majority of species.
Tissue culture is still largely an art, and it is high time that we put more science into it.
