AUXIN: CYTOKININ INTERACTIONS IN THE IN VITRO MICRO-PROPAGATION OF STRAWBERRY PLANTS

Abstract:
A range of auxin (IBA) and cytokinin (6-BAP) concentrations have been examined for their effect on the in vitro growth of strawberry plants. Cultures were grown for six weeks under controlled light and temperature regimes, after which they were assessed for both quantitative and qualitative growth characters. Concentrations of the cytokinin ranging from 0.25–2.5 μmol. 1-1, coupled with auxin concentrations ranging from 0.25–1.0 μmol. 1-1, were most suitable, ensuring rapid proliferation of adventitious buds and promoting leaf expansion whilst discouraging leaf and stem curl and callus formation. These same concentrations also gave the largest gains in fresh weight (G/I ratios). To ensure rapid rooting of cultures omission of the cytokinin is recommended.
