Abstract:
At least fifteen wild Ribes species are present in Chile.
The genetic diversity in the Chilean native species is largely unknown.
This is the first study on the genetic diversity in native plants of Ribes sp. from Chile.
The genetic diversity of sixteen plants of Ribes sp. from central Chile and five red and five black currants were evaluated using a population genetic approach.
From every plant a sample of leaves was obtained for DNA extraction.
RAPD-PCR assays were performed to reveal RAPD variation in 2% agarose gels.
The genetic variation between native and cultivated Ribes was estimated as heterozygosity, and its genetic differentiation was estimated using Nei’s standard genetic distance.
The results show that Chilean native Ribes sp. are genetically different and they have more genetic variability than both cultivated varieties.
