Abstract:
After the dividing of former Czechoslovakia in 1993, the currant genebank was moved from the Research Institute of Fruit and Ornamental Plants in Bojnice (Slovakia) to the Research and Breeding Institute of Pomology Holovousy. The plantation was established at a spacing of 3 x 1.5 m. Weed-free strips are maintained under the bushes with herbicide applications. Regularly cut grass is established between the rows. The genebank is planted at altitude 310 m. Mean annual temperature is 8.14°C and precipitation 654.7 mm. To date 36 black currant, 18 red currant and 11 white currant cultivars are included in the field genebank. In total there is 1693 ha of intensive currant plantations in the Czech Republic, representing approximately 8% of all fruit plantations. Of this amount, 445 ha belong to black and 13 ha to white currant (not newly planted). The objective of the present study is to evaluate currant cultivars originating from the Czech Republic. These include: White currants ‘Jantar’, ‘Olin’, ‘Orion’, and ‘Viktoria’; Red currants ‘Koral’, ‘Losan’, ‘Rubigo’, ‘Trent’, and ‘Vitan’; and Black currants ‘Demon’, ‘Focus’, ‘Moravia’, ‘Nigra’, and ‘Vebus’. SEMPRA Praha Inc. is the owner of the property rights for these currant cultivars.
