MICROSCOPY STUDIES OF THE SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN COBA (ZIZANIA LATIFOLIA TURCZ) AND USTILAGO ESCULENTA P. HENN

Authors:   Tsu-Liang Chang, Iou-Zen Chen, Doris Chi-Ning Chang, Sheng-Feng Hung
Keywords:   Zizania latifolia, Ustilago esculenta, symbiosis, plant part
Abstract:
In vitro cultured Ustilago esculenta P. Henn. and potted coba were observed with light microscopy and a scanning electron microscope. The sporidium and hyphae of the fungi showed typical septa. All the organs of coba, including leaf, stem and root had large air spaces tissues with arenchyma cells. But only in the basal part of the stem could the hyphae of U. esculenta be found. Most of the fungal infected cells were located in the cortex, especially around the vascular bundle, and some of them were full of hyphae as hyphaeclusters.
