ASSESSMENT OF WATERLOGGING TOLERANCE AND CHANGE IN NET PHOTOSYNTHETIC RATE OF MAJOR ACTINIDIA SPECIES DURING FLOODING TREATMENT

Abstract:
One of the most severe problems in Korean kiwifruit production is caused by heavy rains during early summer, leading to root zone damage and severe reduction of plant growth. To assess the flooding tolerance among Actinidia species, potted plants were submerged in big tub. Under flooding condition, the root activity of A. arguta did not decrease until the 7th day of flooding but that of other species severely decreased. When the flooding period continued, leaf necrosis and drying occurred in A. chinensis, A. deliciosa, A. eriantha, and A. arguta in increasing degree with A. arguta having the highest flooding tolerance among the species. The photosynthetic rates of all species decreased during flooding but A. arguta kept normal photosynthesis until the 6th day of flooding while other species had already severe leaf drying and abscission.
