GERMINATION MEDIUM TYPES AND SALINITY EFFECTS ON GERMINATION TRAITS OF TWO DATE PALM CULTIVARS

Author:   M.A. Shaheen
Keywords:   Phoenix dactylifera L., radical, secondary roots, coleoptiles, plumule
Abstract:
Effects of germination medium types (solid and liquid) and four salt concentrations (0.0, 5000, 10000, and 20000 ppm) in the medium on emergence and germination traits for two date palm cultivars of ‘Barhi’ and ‘Sukai’ were studied. Salt treatments were made from the salt of MgSO4, NaCl and CaCl2 with the ratios of 44.4, 54.5 and 22.2 for the three salts, respectively. Significant differences were found between the studied cultivars in radical, secondary roots, coleoptile and plumule initiations. ‘Barhi’ was significantly earlier than ‘Sukai’ in all studied traits except germination initiation. As for medium types, liquid medium was significantly earlier in coleoptile and plumule initiations but later in germination initiation than the solid medium. Concerning the salt concentrations in the germination medium, significantly delaying germination in all studied traits as salt concentrations increased.
