Abstract:
The avocado is a relatively new crop in Cyprus and it grows in the southwest coastal part of the island, where water and climatic conditions are favorable for the successful growing. The objective of this work was to introduce and evaluate avocado cultivars to test them under Cyprus climatic conditions and to select cultivars with good fruit quality and different maturity period in order to cover the needs of the local market throughout the year. The cultivars tested were ‘Pinkerton’, ‘Fuerte’, ‘Ettinger’, ‘Hass’, ‘Arturo’, ‘Tova’, ‘Horshim’, ‘Fucks’, ‘Maoz’, ‘Nachlat’, ‘Nabal’, ‘Reed’, ‘Shomrat’, ‘Whitsel’, ‘Benik’, ‘No. 2631’, ‘Netain’, ‘Topa Topa’, ‘Bacon’ and ‘Lula’. Data collected are tree growth, fruit weight, fruit diameter, fruit length, fruit shape and color, weight of stone, percentage of fruit flesh, oil fruit content and date of maturity.
