ISHS Acta Horticulturae 77: V Symposium on Horticultural Economics

A MONITORING SERVICE FOR TOMATO GROWERS

Author:   G.L. Cladwell
Abstract:
The tomato is the most important protected crop in England and Wales and is at present under considerable economic pressure due to escalating fuel costs.

ADAS Eastern Region have introduced a simple mail-in, mail-out costing service which enables the grower to monitor output and fuel costs for each individual block of tomatoes.

At the end of the season a summary of each glasshouse block is provided.

The grower is able to compare his results with the aggregated results of other holdings. The service is particularly valuable when linked to a grower discussion group.

Armed with the history and results of the crop the Horticultural Advisory Officer is in a stronger position to give positive advice to participants.
