ECONOMICAL ASPECTS OF THE "DUTCH CONCEPTION" OF GROWING PICKLING CUCUMBERS FOR ONCE-OVER MECHANICAL HARVESTING

Author:   K.J. de Vries
Abstract:
The "Dutch Conception" of growing pickling cucumbers (pickles) for once-over mechanical harvesting finds its basic idea in the use of entirely female flowering cultivars in combination with the use of chlorflurenol to induce parthenocarpic fruitset at the desired moment.

The costprices for a range of average fruitweights for two machines are compared with the average purchase prices of hand-picked pickles on Dutch auctions.

The im-pacts of the mechanical harvest of pickles on structure of production for grower and industry, as well as on international trade, are discussed.
