ISHS Acta Horticulturae 77: V Symposium on Horticultural Economics

FOREWORD

Author:   M. Carlsson
Abstract:
In accordance to the suggestions of our former chairman, dr. R.R.W. Folley, the fifth symposium on Horticultural Economics was held in a socialistic country. Thanks to the hospitality of the University of Horticulture in Budapest and to the excellent arrangement of its rector Dr. Imre Dimény and his staff, horticultural economists from socialistic and non-socialistic countries have had the possibility to meet and discuss during an unforgetable week in Budapest.

To this symposium also colleagues from the Commission of Labour and Labour Management were invited. The reason for this was twofold: first because in our Commission there is always interest in contacts with scientists in adjacent diciplines and second that many horticultural economists in socialistic countries regard economics, labour management and mechanization as more close connected fields of research as do horticultural economists in other countries.

Altogether the spread in interest and background of the participants of the symposia on Horticultural Economists became in this new environment still more evident. The reader of this volume of Acta Horticulturae will therefore meet a rather mixed collection of papers with amplitudes in contents from mikro to makro, from theoretical to applied, from pure research to experiences.

This spread in interest, scientific approach and political environment has of course some disadvantages which might be more evident for the reader of the papers than for those who had the possibilities to take part in both formal and informal discussions at the symposium. But most of us find this "spread" very interesting and we therefore also decided at our business meeting to widen our field of contact to other groups of scientists in horticulture to get a still better view on the complex problems which we have to deal with. At the same time decision was taken to create working groups on those subjects where "the specialists" have a need to come together for more profound discussions.
