FORCING CULTURE OF LOW-CHILLING ACTINIDIA INTERSPECIFIC HYBRID 'KOSUI'

Abstract:
‘Kosui’, reported to be an interspecific hybrid between A. arguta and A. deliciosa, has several unique traits such as brownish hairless skin of the fruit, high sugar and low acid contents, very low protease (Actinidin) activity in the flesh. Relatively low chilling requirement is another specific character. In this study, the growing habit of ‘Kosui’ was observed under forcing conditions in glasshouse kept the minimum temperature at 16°C after subjecting the potted vines to 300 (Dec 24, 2004), 800 (Jan 25, 2005), 1400 (Feb 25) and 1800 (Mar 30) chilling hours (CH) below 7.2°C, followed by keeping under the field conditions. In the earliest forcing starting at 300 CH, 22 d were required for budburst, while only 4-9 d at 800 and 1400 CH. In the filed, the buds burst in March 10. The duration from budburst to flowering was shortened by 15-30 d under forcing conditions. Flowering occurred in the late February by the forcing at 300 CH, while it was observed in mid May under the field conditions. By pollinating with pollens of A. rufa, fruit set occurred normally under all conditions. The size of the fruits harvested 120 d after flowering was relatively larger in the vines forced at 1400 CH and total soluble solids content (TSS) was also highest, reaching above 17.3%. In the earliest forcing at 300 CH, TSS content reached about 14.3% in the fruit harvested on July 23, three months earlier than that in the field. These results suggest the potential of fruit production in ‘Kosui’ by forcing even with shorter chilling durations.
