Abstract:
Most sweet cherry cultivars are self-incompatible and have usually problems of fertilization and fruit set. Thus for the commercial production of sweet cherry, pollinizers are needed to be planted. The present study carried out on one of the most important commercial Iranian sweet cherry cultivar (Red Rezaeieh). In this experiment, we studied compatibility or incompatibility of ‘Zarde Daneshkadeh’, ‘Protiva’, ‘Sorati Lavasan’, ‘Haj-Yosef’ and ‘Meshkin Shahr’ cultivars with ‘Red Rezaeieh’ as mother parent. These treatments were studied based on the randomized complete blocks design (RCBD) with three replicates. In order to determine the compatibility or incompatibility of various pollens on ‘Red Rezaeieh’, we used two methods: controlled pollination and observation of pollen tube growth with fluorescence microscope. The results of the controlled pollination method showed that ‘Meshkin Shahr’ and ‘Protiva’ are compatible and ‘Zarde Daneshkadeh’, ‘Sorati Lavasan’ and ‘Haj-Yosefy’ are incompatible. The mean of fruit set in ‘Red Rezaeieh’ with use of pollen grain of ‘Zarde Daneshkadeh’, ‘Protiva’, ‘Sorati Lavasan’, ‘Haj-Yosefy’ and ‘Meshkin Shahr’ were 0.54, 40.49, 0.24, 0.80 and 61.36%, respectively. The results also showed that ‘Red Rezaeieh’ sweet cherry is a self-incompatible cultivar (fruit set=0) and it needs compatible and suitable pollinizer for fruit set. The result of second method showed that pollen tube of ‘Meshkin Shahr’ reached to the ovary in 96h after pollination. This confirms the results of the first method. Finally ‘Protiva’ and ‘Meshkin Shahr’ were selected as the best pollinizer.
