Abstract:
Iran, from the point of view on fruit genetic resources and plant diversity, is one of the most significant and unique countries in the world.
Many Temperate Zone fruit species including apple (Malus), pear (Pyrus), almond, peach, plum, cherry (Prunus), grape (Vitis), walnut (Juglans), and some tropical and subtropical fruits including pistachio (Pistacia), date (Phoenix), pomegranate (Punica), and olive (Olea) have originated or have been domesticated in Iran.
Numerous wild species related to these fruit trees have been documented which are very useful for further improvements of the major fruit trees for breeding disease resistance cultivars and rootstocks.
The conservation of genetic resources of these fruits had been undertaken traditionally by gardeners from long time ago and later several national research institutes started to collect and conserve the local cultivars in field bank (ex situ). Matters regarding their distribution within the provinces, nomenclature, characteristics, uses, and knowledge about the germplasm of those species of greater economic importance are discussed.
