Abstract:
P. cornutum, a biennial plant in Cruciferae family, is a versatile sandy vegetable, which is also used for herbs, feed and binding-sand. In this paper, the effect of low temperature on the vernalization characteristics was studied. Results showed that the plants could not bolt and flower when germinated seeds were treated with many kinds of low temperature treatment, which inferred that germinated seeds could not pass through a certain period of vernalization and that the species tested was probably a green plant vernalization type, thus needing proper low temperature treatment through vernalization. It was indeed found that the minimum responsive stage for effective vernalization were 2 expanded leaf stages with stems having 0.21 cm stalk diameter. The physiological ages of seedling survival over the winter season in field and bolted next year were 5.8 leaves and 0.8 cm stalk diameter in Huhhot area.
